Spectra S1/S2 Guide

Before getting too deep in any specific pump, it’s important to understand the basic functions of two-phase electric breast pumps (which includes basically all pumps on the market).

…Welcome back! Now - the much beloved Spectra. Or about as beloved as any breast pump can really be. :)

Obviously, this is not me, but New Little Life does such a great job with her videos, why invent the wheel? Content is not mine, for educational purposes only.

Spectra Pumping Routine

This routine should be used once you are collecting >30mL/1oz per session (total). This is a sample pumping routine for a 20 minute session with a Spectra. You can adapt this routine to any pump that allows you to set both cycle & vacuum levels. People often need to personalize their routine for best results but this one is a good place to start and particularly good if you’re trying to increase your supply.
This sample routine has two full cycles of let-down + expression plus a bonus let-down, but some folks with strong letdowns may benefit from three full cycles. Generally people benefit from going from faster to slow cycles, and lower to stronger suction levels.

Spectra Stimulation Routine

This routine should be used in the first several days, if necessary/recommended, to stimulate milk production. Switch over to the routine above once you collect >30mL/1oz in 1-2 sessions.

More routines for specific situations from LA Lactation (not mine obviously, but very much trust her expertise and content).
